RUFC - Howard To Hang Up His Whistle
Vital Rotherham on:
There is one Rotherham United fan who will be looking forward to seeing his beloved Millers play more than he did last season and that's World Cup Referee Howard Webb.
Howard, who is an Honorary Ambassador for Rotherham United, has decided to hang up his whistle and retire after twenty-five years as a top referee.
The forty-three year old Millers fan is to take up a new role as Technical Director of Professional Game Match Officials Limited
- or PGMOL for short - which is the body responsible for the training and development of match officials operating in the Premier League, Football League and FA Competitions. (And by golly do some of them need it!)
Speaking to The Independent Howard said, 'I am very excited to start this new chapter in my career . I have spent over a decade with the best seat in the house for Barclays Premier League matches, been lucky enough to be involved in nine UEFA and FIFA tournaments, and taken charge of the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup finals. Refereeing has given me so much and it`s important that match officials who have had the rewards remain in the game to pass on their knowledge .
'Over the past five years we have made huge strides in terms of our accuracy, fitness and professionalism and the current Select Group are the best referees this country has ever produced so I am thrilled that I will still get the chance to work with them and to help the next generation of the Select Group officials.'
Good Luck for your future Howard and we hope to see you up and down the country supporting The Millers!
