John's arrival at Millmoor in a double transfer from Millwall with Tony Towner helped to spark a great revival in Rotherham United's fortunes as they stormed to the Division Three championship.
He played a vital role in midfield helping to provide several goals for the front men while weighing in with six of his own.
But the following season he couldn't hold down a regular place until the beginning of March when he went on to play the remaining 14 games during which time he netted eight goals. That earned him a more regular place again in 1982/83 when he hit nine goals although his hat-trick in a 3-1 home win against Blackburn Rovers on May 7th, 1983, couldn't avoid relegation to Division Three.
When he left Rotherham, he had taken his league appearances for them to exactly 100.
