RUFC - Warney Blames Shambolic Defending
Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne says if he had any hair he'd be pulling it out after today's five-one thrashing at QPR.
Blaming defending Warney told Radio Sheffield 'We defended shambolically today. We told the centre-halves not to take any chances, to clear the ball if they had opportunity and that wasn't the case.
'We started the game well but they scored early on from a defensive error in fact we gave them two goals really. If you defend like that in the Championship every mistake is punished. We'd trained well all week and as coaches we've worked hard then you see it all undone with one big ball and first shot of the game then the second one when Semi (Ajayi) dilly-dallied on it on the edge of the box it is tough to take. I know how hard the game was but individual errors are costing us.
'I thought we were the better team in the first half and probably had more possession and Joe Newell scored a good goal.
'I told a few home truths at half-time hoping that would get a reaction but the same individuals had a poor second half. There's only so many times you can encourage people. To give a penalty away straight after half-time it was like Aimen (Belaid) had got over het up and to go three-one down the lads, like they have all season, think the games over.
'But, in the last twenty minutes I can't say the lads aren't competitive but they weren't brave and we can't carry anyone and I thought today we carried three players who really underperformed which cost us big. I won't say who they are but if you were at the game or see the scoreline it won't take much to know who I'm talking about. I don't want to berate these players but they must know they're better than that.
'I'm a proud man and I like clapping the fans off when I go and thank them for coming - if I had a better bank balance I'd pay for their tickets today.
'It is tough for me. I give everything I've got but, obviously at the moment that isn't enough. We're obviously down but we still have a purpose to go out every game and try and give our fans something to clap. I feel embarrassed to look at those who have come down today although Joe Newell's goal is probably the goal of the day in any league today I'd have thought.
'Something's got to change because I can't have results like this embarrassing this great club.'
