RUFC - Warne Pleased With Performance If Not Result

Despite the two-one defeat against play-off hopefuls Reading, Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne told MillersPlayer that he was 'pretty proud' of his team.

'The lads did what we asked them to,' Warney said after the game at Reading on Easter Monday, 'and overall I'm proud of their performance.

'When I went in at half-time I felt pretty comfortable and thought the lads have defended well and that we were looking pretty resolute. But we knew in the second half they'd throw the kitchen sink at us.

'Reading are pretty formidable with the ball and at home their runs been excellent so I knew we wouldn't have that much of the ball but thought we might have enough to create a chance. It took a wonder goal for them to get back into the game and then, unfortunately, they cut us open again later on. They are pushing for promotion and can bring on players like (Lewis) Grabban when our lads are tired which had a massive effect.

'We changed our system a couple of times and tried to get back in the game and I thought in the last eight or nine minutes we were in the ascendancy and we went for it. I thought we defended well but didn't retain the ball well enough. When you win the ball back you have to keep it to keep a foot in the game and I didn't think we did that today.

I think we really competed well. I'm proud the lads haven't given up because they've nothing to play for but pride.'

'Yes I'm disappointed in the result but I'm proud of the performance.'
