RUFC - What Happened To Our Wembley Heroes - 8

With the Millers getting ready to play in League One, what happened to the players who last got us out of this league . . . .

Richie Smallwood

Twenty-five year old Richie came through the Middlesbrough Youth Ranks and became captain of their Reserve side. The 2009/10 season saw him sign his first professional contract, making his debut in October 2010. Three months later the midfielder signed an eighteen month contract with the club and went on to play around eighty times for 'Boro.

In January 2014 he joined the Millers on loan until the end of the season and played twenty times scoring the winning penalty in the shoot-out at Wembley to take Rotherham into the Championship. Impressed with him Rotherham put a bid in for him in the summer which was originally rejected but just after the start of the season Middlesbrough accepted £175,000 for him. Apart from the penalty, Richie's first goal didn't come until February 2015 when he scored the Millers second goal in our three-all draw at home to Derby and it was fourteen months before his second goal came in the four-nil away win at MK Dons.

After five games last season Rotherham fans voiced their 'concern' when Alan Stubbs sent Richie out on loan to Scunthorpe for the rest of the season. He scored in his first game for the Iron and went on to play another nineteen games before Paul Warne sent for him back mid-January and although he couldn't keep the Millers up (that would have taken the whole Barcelona team to do that!) At the end of the season Richie was offered a new contract but in May turned it down.

On 20th June Richie signed a two year deal with Blackburn Rovers.

South Yorkshire Bragging Rights Go To The Millers

Rotherham United's fighting spirit did them well this afternoon after they came from one down in the first half to win the South Yorkshire derby with Doncaster Rovers two-one - but boy, did they leave it late!

Joe Mattock was back in the starting line-up for the Millers with Michael Ihiekwe, who had replaced him last week, nowhere to be seen. Rovers also made one change with Ben Whiteman replacing the injured Luke McCullough.

It was a scrappy start to the game and although Rovers
