RUFC - Warney 'We Defended As A Team'

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne was just as pleased with the clean sheet this afternoon as the three points his Millers team won.

Speaking after the one-nil home win over Northampton Town, Warney told Radio Sheffield, 'I thought the lads were good today.

'They didn't take enough chances but defender really well and I thought my 'keeper (Marek Rodak) was outstanding.

'It would have made it easier for us if we'd got another goal, we had two easy chances late on and managed to miss them both. Perhaps I could have made the subs a bit quicker but I'm really pleased with the one-nil win. The save their 'keeper made off Michael (Ihiekwe) in the first half was unbelievable

'I think we've been playing well at home and, apart from the Blackburn game, I think we've been playing well away from home.

Northampton set up a bit defensive today, which I thought they'd do, and we didn't have as fluent a first half as I'd have liked as they had people behind the ball. At half-time I encouraged the lads to put the ball in behind and turn them because I think we were more athletic than them and create chances. If teams come and sit behind us then we have to be even better to win.'

Asked about the two chances that went begging at the end, Warney said, 'Will (Vaulks) is one of the best finisher at the club so I'm surprised he didn't score and after the lad dropped to the floor six yards out you'd have fancied Jono (Clarke-Harris) as well. It would have been a nicer end to the game because they (Northampton) kept throwing the kitchen sink at us and last season they might have nicked one at the end or even won it. But the way the lads have defended and put their bodies on the line they will have taken a lot of confidence from that. They defended as a team.

'It's nice to win another game.'
