RUFC - Newell Hoping For A Start On Saturday

Rotherham United midfielder Joe Newell is hoping his performance off the bench on Tuesday night will help getting a place in the starting eleven for the game against Rochdale on Saturday.

The twenty-four year old has made twelve appearances for the Millers so far this season, including coming off the bench during the second half of the Checkatrade Trophy game against Chesterfield on Tuesday night.

'I think when you come off the bench you do have to inject something into the game and I've played long enough now to know what's needed,' he told iFOLLOW, 'so when me and Bally (David Ball) came on we tried to run about.

'I think we dominated the last half an hour and their goal was probably the only time they were in our half for the last twenty minutes and I don't think Rich (Richard O'Donnell) had much to do in goal. But they've done well to stay in the game late on but we were on top so it was a bit of a blow.'

Asked how he thought his season was going, Joe replied, 'It's been OK. When I've been in I think I've done alright. But with the strength of this squad once you have a bad to average game you're out.

'A lot of people say that competition for places is good but if they were honest I think they'd really like to know that they were starting every week.

'I hope to start on Saturday and I hope my performance on Tuesday will help that.'

Asked about the away form, where the Millers have won just one away game all season, Joe says, 'I thought we were in the game at Bradford and I felt we should have got something at Peterborough. Perhaps Blackburn and maybe Fleetwood are the only games I think we deserved to have lost.

'It's not a big thing and the lads aren't keeping it in their heads and we aren't going into away games thinking any different to home games.'
