RUFC - Warne Wants His 'Keepers To Be A Bit Maverick

RUFC - Warne Wants His 'Keepers To Be A Bit Maverick

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne had a bit of dilemma last Saturday - who to play in goal. Richard O'Donnell who hadn't had a league game since September until our away game at Rochdale when Marek Rodak was on international duty.

O'Donnell got the nod playing out a man of the match performance and keeping his second clean sheet in two games.

'I thought he did well on Saturday. It wasn't so much the saves he made because I'd expect him to make all of those but it was the fact that he was on his front foot coming for stuff,' Warney told Radio Sheffield.

'And that's what I want. I want my 'keepers to be a bit maverick. I want them to come and help the team out. If they do that and do make a mistake here and there then I'll back them.

'His performance was really good and although Marek hadn't done anything wrong, Richie kept his place.

'I do look at goalkeepers probably a bit quirkier than most managers and if they have a bad game then I'll just change them. No other position on the pitch has the luxury of three or four bad games so why should 'keepers?

'But he's now set his standard and hopefully he'll stick to it.'
