RUFC - First Round FA Cup Exploits In Recent Years
Rotherham United move into Cup action this weekend when they make their first appearance in the Round One proper of the FA Cup since 2013.
That day the Millers welcomed Bradford City to the New York Stadium and promptly went on to beat them three-nil with two goals from Kieran Agard and one from Alex Revell sending Rotherham into the second round with another home tie, this time against Rochdale.
The season before had seen the Millers again at home with Stevenage the visitors to the New York Stadium. Mark Bradley gave the hosts the lead on the half-hour mark followed by two goals in three minutes from Lee Frecklington. The 'Boro pulled one back when James Dunne scored on fifty-eight minutes with Filipe Morais making it an uncomfortable twenty last minutes for the Millers who won three-two.
The Millers travelled to Hoker Street in November 2011 for the first round tie where a spirited Barrow took the lead just after the quarter of an hour mark. The Millers huffed and puffed getting an equaliser with eight minutes to go from Lewis Grabban. Five minutes later a Gareth Evans cross was deemed to have been handled in the area by Paul Smith and Grabban scored from the penalty spot to give the visitors an away tie at Shrewsbury.
Don Valley Stadium was the host for the Millers game in November 2010 when York City were the visitors churning out a goalless draw with Rotherham losing the replay at Bootham Cresent three-nil.
A Sunday in November in 2009 saw Rotherham travel to take on non-league Wealdstone. Adam Le Fondre and Kevin Ellison gave the league side a two-nil lead going into half-time with Ryan Ashe pulling one back for the hosts in the sixty-third minute. Drewe Broughton gave the Millers a three goal cushion again with Ashe making it three-two on the stroke of full-time.
2008 saw Aldershot and Rotherham play out a one-all draw at the Recreation Ground with the Millers scoring first with a goal from Micky Cummins only for them to give a penalty away in the final mintue of the game which John Grant duly put away. The replay at Don Valley saw the Shots win three-nil.
Another Sunday first round was on the 11th November 2007 when the Millers trekked to The New Lawn to take on Forest Green Rovers. Stuart Fleetwood put the hosts two-up before half-time but a Stephen Brogan penalty followed by a Chris O'Grady goal gave the visitors a replay at Millmoor which went horribly wrong for the Millers who lost three-nil.
And the season before wasn't much better for the Millers who lost three-nil away at Peterborough.
November 2005 saw a seven goal thriller at Millmoor when Mansfield Town were the visitors. Simon Brown gave the Stags the lead on twenty-eight minutes with Paul McLaren equalising two minutes later. On thirty-seven minutes the visitors took the lead again this time from Giles Coke but a minute later McLaren was there again to equalise for the second time. Nine minutes into the second half Deon Burton gave the hosts the lead for the first time but a certain Richie Barker scored twice in the last fifteen minutes to give Mansfield the win. In the final minute of the game Michael Keane of Rotherham and Gus Uhlenbeek from Mansfield were sent off.
The first time the Millers played in the FA Cup first round of the new century was in November 2000 away at the Racecourse Ground against Wrexham when an Alan Lee strike on thirty-nine minutes was the only goal of the game. The Millers ended with ten men after Guy Branston saw his second yellow of the game on the sixty-seventh minute.
