RUFC - Football Makes You Do Daft Things

Rotherham United issued a Club Statement yesterday, some of it regarding a 'pitch incursion'.

Well, one thing I will say is I'm pleased they didn't call it a 'pitch invasion' as about fifty people couldn't contain their excitement after Joe Newell scored the winner from the penalty spot.

It happens - we've seen it happen at the New York Stadium when hundreds dashed on to celebrate with Lee Frecklington when he scored to send us up to League One.

So, yes, I was expecting a statement of some sort.

But today, on social media, I've seen someone pondering if any of those, who are clearly seen in 'photo's, will get a banning order.

Now, no way do I condone pitch invasions but I'd feel a ban would be very harsh. The people, mostly young men, who ran onto the pitch to hug Newell as he flew over to the corner after scoring can't have been on for more than three or four minutes - we were still celebrating, arms aloft (and my arms don't stay aloft very long these days!) when they were on their way back to the stands.

Yes, I do know that it is an offence to enter the field of play and horrible things have happened to players and opposing fans when people have run onto the pitch. And, yes, if it had happened at the Keepmoat with Millers fans running on the pitch, that, in my eyes, would have been a different story. But these were our own fans in a corner of our pitch at our own end in our own ground. I think that should be taken into consideration.

In my mind the powers who be should be concentrating on incidents that have been alleged to have taken place outside the ground - none of which I can comment on as I walked from the ground to the town centre seeing nothing out of the ordinary.

I'd ask the club to not add harshly if they know who these lads are who were on the pitch - sometimes football makes you do daft things.

What do you think?
