RUFC - Warney 'We Are In A Good Place At The Moment'
Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne says that some of this season's success (so far and long may it continue) was down to pre-season.
The Millers, whose game away at Gillingham was called off earlier today, are on a run of fourteen games without defeat, the last seven of those being wins and sitting quite nicely in fourth place in League One.
Speaking to Alan Biggs, Author of Confessions Of A Football Reporter and Laws of the Jungle: Football's Monkey Business for Sheffield Live TV here are a few excerpts from the interview.
Warney said, 'The lads put a lot of effort in pre-season and there was a lot of changes behind the scenes and I knew it was going to take a bit of time, which you don't always get in football but the Chairman has been great with me.
'In recent weeks and months everything we've tried to put into the lads has come to the forefront and we've had a little bit of luck but we are in a good place at the moment.
'When I first took the job it was difficult. It was tough going last season and a really tough job and in fairness to the players probably having the fitness coach in charge wasn't the most motivating. In a lot of the games were were competitive but not competitive enough and I can understand the fans' frustrations. But a year on having the coaches in I wanted, the players in I wanted I do feel a lot more confident and I would have regretted it if I hadn't taken the job.
'I'm always happy to chat about the decisions I've made. I brought in ex-Miller Richie Barker from Charlton who has been brilliant for me, Matt Hamshaw was with me last year and is like my right-hand man and I brought Mike Pollitt back who was my goalkeeper at Rotherham plus Rotherham legend John Breckin so it's all Rotherham people running the club and I'm proud to be the Manager.
'Since Richard Wood got back in the team he's been faultless and he's my leader on the pitch but off the pitch he's been crucial and keeps the dressing room ship shape. His performances have been excellent and the younger lads really look up to him. He's a great bloke and we're lucky to have him.'
