'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Cahill on move

Rotherham United manager, Mark Robins, was only just in time when he went to sign striker Tom Cahill from Matlock Town.

The twenty year old striker told The Advertiser, 'I was only two days away from signing up to play college football in the States when Mark Robins rang.'

Cahill was getting ready to head out to the USA after graduating in Law from Sheffield University, a career which he has now put on hold to pursue the life of a footballer.

'Signing for the Millers was too good a chance to turn down,' Cahill continued, 'it's a dream for me to get the chance to play in the Football League. Going to places like Notts County and Bradford City should be good.'

Cahill had a trial with the Reserves in their last game of the season and Robins saw the potential in the youngster. 'He's a good strong lad,' the manager said, 'and even though he isn't a target man, he has a good eye for goal.'

Chorley born Cahill was at Blackburn's school of excellence as a child and he said, 'I've always played football. I played at County level and then English Colleges before moving to Sheffield University.

'I was asked to go along to Matlock and I scored on my debut for them and they offered me a contract. They had a bit of an injury crisis and I got in the side and sort of stuck around.

'I graduate in a couple of weeks and then I will be able to concentrate on my football - I can't wait!'

Good thinking on the clubs part - employing a law graduate - might come in handy in the near future!
