RUFC - Head to Head v Chester

Prior to Saturday's meeting between Rotherham United and Chester at Milmoor, here is the complete history of this fixture.

The last meeting between the 2 clubs at Millmoor came on 14th of August 1999.

After a losing start to the season at Lincoln the previous week and a 1-0 home defeat to Hull in the Worthington's Cup, Rotherham desperately needed a good result against Chester to kick start the season.

After a goalless first half, things weren't looking very promising, but second half goals by Gary Martindale (2 penalties), Leo Fortune-West and Kevin Watson sent the Millers on the way to an eventual promotion from Division 3.

Chester unfortunately ended the season by falling through the Football League trap door into the Conference after being a Football League club since 1931.

2,966 fans attended this game.

Prior to that Rotherham had lost just 1 League meeting from the previous 10 encounters at Millmoor dating back to 1979.

Other big League victories over Chester at Millmoor include a 6-1 win back in 1935.

5-2 win on Bank Holiday Monday in August 1987, when former Barnsley striker Carl Airey opened his account for the Millers with 4 goals, including 2 penalties, following his move to Millmoor from Belgian club Charleroi.

Another ex-Tyke Winston Campbell added the 5th.

In November 1989, the newly promoted Millers extended their unbeaten League run at Milmoor to 12 games with a 5-0 win over Chester.

Rotherham were free scoring in those days at Fortress Millmoor and this game made it 20 goals in the previous 5 home games. The 5 goals against Chester came from Bobby Williamson 2, Shaun Goodwin, Des Hazel and John Buckley in front of 5,216 delirious fans.

This win took Rotherham up to 4th place in Division 3 and moved Chester down to 19th.
