RUFC - Head to Head - v Mansfield

This Tuesday sees the 6th Cup meeting between Rotherham United and Mansfield Town.

Last time out saw one of the most dramatic games in recent Millmoor history.

On November 5th 2005 Rotherham met Mansield Town in the FA Cup 1st round, and the visitors drew first blood after 28 minutes with a headed goal from Simon Brown.

However just 2 minutes later, Millers midfielder Paul McLaren hit a cracking leveller from 25 yards past former Owls keeper Kevin Pressman.

Then another header, this time from Giles Coke gave Mansfield back the lead on 37 minutes.

Not to be outdone though, Rotherham hit back immediately as Paul McClaren claimed his second goal again from outside the box.

This made it 4 goals in just 10 minutes as the 2 sides went in at half time level at 2-2.

9 minutes into the second half and Rotherham took the lead for the first time that day as a Michall Keane corner found Deon Burton who shot the Millers 3-2 up.

Rotherham held on until 15 minutes from time, but former Millers favourite Richie Barker came back to haunt us with an equaliser.

Referee Darren Drysdale had a very busy afternoon too as he booked 7 players, then in the 90th minute he sent off Millers midfielder Micheal Keane and Town's Gus Uhlenbeek after the pair locked horns in a tense finale.

Then Richie Barker struck again giving the Millers no time to reply and he sent his old club hurtling out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.

Prior to this game was a meeting in one of the Johnstone Paints Trophy's former names in 1986.

The Millers and The Stag's met in the early group stage of the Freight Rover Trophy, and Rotherham were put out of the competition in front of 1,317 at Millmoor as Mansfield topped the group following a 1-1 draw.

areth Evans netted for the Millers and Jeff Chandler, on loan from Derby County replied for The Stags.

Mansfield went on to win the competition beating Bristol City in the Final at Wembley in front of 58.000 fans.

The Other 2 Cup meetings between the sides ended in FA Cup defeats for Rotherham.

An FA Cup 1st round game in November 1984 saw Town take the honours following a 2-1 victory at Field Mill.

Dave Caldwell and Tony Lowery scoring for Mansfield and Mick Gooding replying for Rotherham.

Finally a 2nd round tie in December 1968 was won by Town at the 2nd attempt as an Alan Gilliver brace for the Millers in front of 10,379 at Millmoor took the game to a replay.

The return at Field Mill saw the home side clinch a 3rd round tie with Sheffield United with a 1-0 win in front of 12,876.

Here's to a first Cup victory for Rotherham over Mansfield on Tuesday.

No problem Caz, cant see us taking many anyway. There was only 42 of us at Chester in the first round in 1995-96.

There weren't that many that rainy night in Donny I seem to recall! When we kept having to move up the steps to avoid the rising river!
