RUFC - Head to Head - v Wrexham

Ahead of Saturday's visit to Wrexham, here is the history of the fixture over the years.

With just 7 victory's in 35 League visits to Wrexham, The Racecourse Ground is hardly one of Rotherham's favourite haunts over the years.
Although one good point if you believe in superstitions is the fact that the last 3 Millers wins here have all been in promotion winning seasons.

Last time out was in September 2000 and the 92 miles from Rotherham to Wrexham must have seemed like 992 to some travelling Millers as the Petrol strikes and the blockades made the journey torturous to some.
This was reflected in the poor gate of 2,126, which was half of Wrexham's seasonal average at that time.
The fans who did make the journey comfortably were treated as Paul Warne put the Millers 1-0 up after just 2 minutes.
Rob Scott doubled the scoreline on 56 minutes and Paul Warne claimed his second with 11 minutes left, and despite Hector Sam hitting a consolation after 89 the game and the points were already Rotherham's.
This was a blessed relief for The Millers as we had been humiliated just 3 days earlier as we lost 6-1 at Cambridge.
The Wrexham game was arguably the turning point of the season as we swept to our 2nd successive promotion.

The previous victory came at the end of season 1991-92.
United were on the brink of promotion from Division 4 and came back from North Wales with a 3-0 scoreline in a totally one-sided game, leaving us with just 1 point needed to claim promotion.
3,477 fans saw Shaun Goater giving Rotherham a first half lead, and further goals from Goater and Des Hazel set up the promotion party 4 days later v Chesterfield at Millmoor.

The third win in this trilogy came during March in the Championship winning season of 1988-89.
2,929 saw Rotherham reach half time with a reasonable 1-1 scoreline against Wrexham who were also chasing promotion.
Kevin Russell netting for the home side, and Bobby Williamson replying for Rotherham with his 18th goal of the season.
However the second half belonged to 2nd placed Rotherham as Williamson notched his second and Stewart Evans hit a brace to complete the 4-1 rout.

The games to forget at Wrexham were obviously the 2 heavy defeats of 1995 and 1978.
Carl Muggleton was the humiliated Keeper in the 7-0 defeat in 1995 in just his 2nd game of his loan spell from Stoke City.
Young New Zealand born defender Scott Smith was unfortunately playing his first League game of the season also.
Meanwhile Tom McAllister was the one with the bad back following the 7-1 defeat in April 1978 as Wrexham won the 3rd Division championship in front of 16,586 mainly celebratory fans.
Trevor Phillips scored the solitary Millers goal as Rotherham went in 5-0 down at Half-time.
