RUFC - ' Schools Should Back Us'

Rotherham United are aiming to have a signed, framed shirt in every reception area of every school in the borough.

Mark Hitchens, the clubs community liaison officer, told The Advertiser this week, 'we want as many schools as possible to back us, after all we are their local team and I think they should be proud to back us.

'Apart from having the framed shirt there are many other benefits as well. These include free tickets for games, player visits to assemblies or one-to-one reading schemes, question and answer sessions and other projects. We are open to ideas.'

Recent surveys show that there is a lack of children attending football matches and the Millers, like other clubs, are aware of the need to 'catch 'em young' and to stop them being 'lured' away by the power of the bigger clubs.

Bobby Charlton recently spoke about getting children from behind a computer and get them out playing sport again and Mark echoed this. 'We want to get them down to Millmoor; get them more active. Our scheme can help with this.

'This is about raising the profile of Rotherham United and helping local schoolchildren at the same time.'
