RUFC - Head to Head v Grimsby

Rotherham United entertain Grimsby Town in the 2nd round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday night at Millmoor, here's a look back at the history of cup meetings between the 2 clubs.

Although the Millers have the lions share of wins in the Football League against Grimsby with 20 wins to 11, the Mariners have the edge on cup wins over us by 5 wins to 3 in 9 games.
The vast majority of the 9 games came between 1984 and 1991.

The last cup meeting was a first round League Cup tie in 1991 played over 2 legs.
Grimsby took an healthy 3-1 lead in the first leg at Millmoor as future Miller Jim Dobbin opened the scoring and Murray Jones made it 2-0 by half time.
Ronnie Robinson pulled one back for Rotherham after the break, but former Barnsley striker Tony Rees made it 3-1 to the visitors and left the Millers with a mountain to climb at Blundell Park 7 days later.
It proved to be too much for Rotherham and a solitary second leg goal from former European Cup winner Garry Birtles gave Grimsby the tie 4-1 on aggregate, and set them up with a money spinning 2nd round tie with Aston Villa.

Prior to this meeting was in 1988-89 when the 2 teams met strangely on 6 occasions in 4 different competitions.
The League meetings both went to Rotherham as we headed for the 4th division championship, but it was mixed fortunes in the cups.
First of all was a 2 legged tie in the League Cup, and a second half own goal from Grimsby's former Wolves defender Stephen Stoutt gave Rotherham the advantage at Blundell Park, then a first half winner from Tony Grealish at Millmoor gave us a 2-0 aggregate win and the pick of the second round draw as Rotherham drew Manchester United.
In November of that year Rotherham were drawn to play Grimsby in the Johnstone Paints former life when it was known as the Sherpa Van Trophy.
The game was played at Grimsby and despite losing to a Steve Saunders goal that night we went through from the group stages courtesy of a 2-1 win over Doncaster Rovers a fortnight later.
We were eliminated from the Trophy in the first knockout stage after a 4-3 defeat at Blackpool.
Finally that season was a second round FA Cup tie, again at Blundell Park.
The Millers went out after a 3-2 defeat, with Tony Grealish and a Mark Dempsey penalty coming from us and goals from Shaun Cunnington, Mark North and a Billy Russell own goal giving the Mariners a 3rd round tie with Middlesborough.

The other games were a best to be forgotten 6-1 defeat at Grimsby in a 1984-85 League Cup 3rd round replay after a goalless draw at Millmoor.
Alan Birch scoring Rotherham's solitary goal and goals from 6 different players for the home side.
Kevin Drinkell, Steve Foley, Gary Lund, Paul Wilkinson, Phil Bonnyman and Paul Emson netting for Grimsby.

The first cup tie between the 2 clubs was a 3-1 win for the Millers at Grimsby in a 2nd round League Cup tie in 1963.
Millers goals coming from James Blain, Ian Butler and Brian Tiler.
