After a bit of confusion over the purchasing of tickets at Field Mill, the congratulations to the Millers fans who'd walked it and then listening to Stags fans in the club about their anger with owner Keith Haslam, it was quite fitting that a 'freak/fluke/wonder' goal from substitute Jamie Yates won this game.
Yates, who came on ten minutes into the second half, launched the ball from forty yards out and, with goalkeeper Jason White, expecting it to go over the bar (and us behind the net waiting to catch it!), the ball flew into the back of the net just under the crossbar. It was difficult to know who was the more surprised - the goalie, who realised too late what was going to happen, the Millers fans or Yates himself!
Rotherham started the stronger with Tom Cahill having a shot at goal in the opening minute. Pablo Mills and Peter Holmes combined well together, both having shots to no avail before Andy Warrington, who was a doubt before the game, brought off a good save from Michael Boulding. Cahill had two more shots blocked by Jason White and Holmes saw a good effort go just wide before a Marc Joseph free kick was saved. Just before half-time, Boulding had a good effort saved by a diving Warrington before another shot that was blocked by Graham Coughlan.
The home side started the better in the second half and only a diving save by Warrington stopped Boulding putting them one up. Matty Hamshaw and Nathan Arnold went close before the visitors, once again, took control. Dale Tonge blazed a shot over the bar from twenty-five yards out before the goal that saw the Millers take all three points. After that, the Millers defence held up against a bit of Mansfield pressure and Boulding put a shot just wide from an Arnold cross. Both Peter Holmes and Mark Hudson had shots turned away for corners before Hudson blazed over the top from five yards out. In the last minute of time added on Mansfield got a corner and up went 'keeper White only for the ball to fall to Rotherham's Dale Tonge. With everyone in the Rotherham half, Tonge wasted the chance when he overran the ball in front of an empty net.
With Dagenham and Redbridge coming back from two down to win three-two, barring a miracle, and Chester losing their final two games, it looks like the Stags will be playing non-league football next season.
