Millers suffer defeat to Sheffield

Rotherham United's pre-season fixtures took them to Dronfield this evening to play a lively Sheffield FC team.

Rotherham put out quite a strong side with six players who have played first team football starting. All three goals came in the first half with Matt Rooney getting the first for the home side and Alex Rhodes scoring for the visitors before Gary Townsend got the winner just before the half time whistle.

The home side started the better and Steve Wolley saw Millers 'keeper Mark Oxley save his first shot at goal and a minute later, Steve Connor, at the other end, made Steve Hernandez make a save from his shot. The goal came when Oxley saved from Powell but the shot rebounded to Rooney to fire home. The Millers had a couple of chances straight after that when Sharps saw his header blocked on the line and Rhodes fired a shot over the bar. Rhodes then made amends by getting the equaliser when he got on the end of a Steve Connor cross to put the ball in the net. The visitors had more chances, Rhodes, Jamie Yates and Mark Lynch hit balls wide then, just before half time Sheffield got a corner, Wolley floated the ball over and Townsend headed home at the near post.

The second half petered out a bit and both teams made a few substitues. Tom Cahill and Peter Holmes both saw shots go wide for the visitors but there was little goalmouth action. I thought Yates was lively and also Haggerty and when he came on Cahill.

Star Player

Steven Connor - lively and put in some good crosses
