Rotherham United 0 - Scunthorpe United 2

Don Valley Stadium

27 July 2011 7.45pm

Attendance: 702 (59 away fans)

Millers Ironed

Two first half goals saw Scunthorpe United beat Rotherham United this evening at Don Valley Stadium in this pre-season friendly game.

Scunthorpe went ahead on eight minutes after Bobby Grant found Jimmy Ryan and the twenty-two year old smashed the ball past Conrad Logan in the Millers` goal. Ten minutes later Grant got by two defenders and was only stopped by Ryan Cresswell who fouled him in the area and gave away a penalty which Grant took and put it underneath the Millers` 'keeper. And it could have been worse for the Millers when Jordan Robertson shot from ten yards out but it went straight into the arms of Logan. On the half-hour mark the Millers nearly pulled one back when a Danny Schofield corner found Cresswell but he couldn`t get the ball down to get it in the net. Ten minutes before half-time the Iron nearly scored again when Ryan got the ball to Kieran Djilali but his curling shot went wide. Just before the whistle Adam Le Fondre, who is reportedly interesting Alan Knill and Scunthorpe, received a ball over the top from Dale Tonge but his shot rose over the top of the bar.

The second half began slowly and the first chance fell to the visitors on fifty-five minutes when a Robertson free-kick from twenty yards out sailed wide of the right-hand post. A Millers breakaway found Le Fondre in front of goal but his weak shot wasn`t good enough to worry Josh Lillis in goal. On the hour mark another Schofield corner again found Creswell`s head and Lillis did well to palm the ball away for a corner. Jason Taylor came close to getting a consolation for the Millers on seventy-four minutes while Lewis Grabban rattled the outside of the post in the final few minutes.

Not exactly what Millers fans wanted to see, a loss at Don Valley, but, as we keep saying, pre-season games are more for looking at what the players are capable of than the scoreline.
