Millers Get First Away Win Of Season
17 August 2013 3.00pm
Attendance: 3,110 (509 Millers)
Rotherham United came from a goal behind at the Broadfield Stadium to take all three points against Crawley Town this afternoon.
The Millers started the stronger of the two sides and in the opening two minutes Ben Pringle had a shot which was parried away to safety by Reds` 'keeper Paul Jones. Four minutes later Pringle turned provider when a floated cross in found Lee Frecklington but his shot was deflected over the bar. In fact it was all the Millers so it came as a bit of a surprise on fourteen minutes when Mat Sadler curled in a free-kick which found its way through a body of players into the bottom corner of the net. After that the home side had more of the game and they had a succession of free-kicks and corners before the Millers got a free-kick which was quickly taken by Pringle missing Agard by millimetres. Minutes later a Mark Bradley cross wasn`t collected by Jones and fell to Michael O`Connor who saw his shot headed off the goal line while, at the other end, a Jamie Proctor header went just past Shearer`s post and Josh Simpson saw a shot deflected for a corner. With the visitors starting to pile on the pressure they finally got the goal they deserved on thirty-six minutes when a Pringle corner was flicked across goal by Kari Arnason finding the head of Kieran Agard who stuck the ball into the net from close range. And, but for Jones, the Millers would have gone in at half-time in front after a Pringle cross found Alex Revell who`s header was tipped over the bar by the home sides` 'keeper.
At the start of the second half former Crawley forward Matt Tubbs had an opportunity to score but he put his header over the crossbar with Shearer saving from Proctor at the other end. Lee Frecklington nearly put the Millers in front but saw his shot from twenty-yards out go wide while Jones tipped a rasping shot from Joe Skarz over the bar. With the Millers once again on top their pressure paid off when some poor defending by the home side saw an O`Connor shot cleared only as far as David Worrall, on for Tubbs, who hit a sweet half-volley into the bottom corner of the net to open his scoring for Rotherham. In time added on by referee James Linington (and where he got four minutes from nobody knows) a cross from Pringle set-up Revell but his header was ruled out for off-side.
All in all a magnificent - and deserved - three points from the Millers this afternoon which sees them jump up to seventh place in League One.
