Rotherham United suffered their first loss of the season this afternoon in a game which, with all the chances, they really, really should have got one if not all three points.
It was a lively start to the game with the visitors on the front foot from the off and new-old boy Paul Taylor tried to back-heel the ball in the area but Craig Morgan was equal to it and cleared while a minute later Britt Assombalonga headed over the bar. After those initial first minutes the Millers started to boss the game with Kieran Agard having the Millers first shot on goal on seven minutes firing wide of the right hand post followed by a Ben Pringle shot that also went just wide. Pringle also saw a shot clear the crossbar before Daniel Nardiello had the perfect opportunity to open the scoring after some good work by midfielder Rob Milsom whose shot was pushed away by Posh 'keeper Robert Olejnik and when the ball fell to Nardiello he put the ball over the bar with an empty net to aim at. Moments later Milsom was in the action again and had another shot at goal which went just wide while just before half-time a Pringle corner was hit round the box before falling to Mark Bradley but his shot, which looked to be heading for the back of the net, hit a defender and went out for another corner. In the final minute of the half Lee Frecklington sent over a cross to Nardiello who in turn headed into the path of Alex Revell but the Millers tall striker couldn't control the ball and it went behind.
The hosts started the second half well and Pringle saw a shot go across goal before the worst happened. With the Millers appealing for off-side Millers 'keeper Scott Shearer, who had been a spectator for most of the first half, and Joe Skarz got in a bit of a tangle with the Millers defender having to put the ball behind for a corner. From the corner Shearer was being blocked off by a Posh player on the line and the ball was put out for a second corner which was floated in by Grant McCann and Kari Arnason jumped, arms aloft and hit the ball with his arm and referee Sarginson had no hesitation to give the penalty. Up stepped McCann and sent Shearer the wrong way to open the scoring for the visitors. A few minutes later Taylor could have made it two but put the ball well over from distance while, at the other end, Bradley found himself unmarked on the far post but somehow headed wide. The next shot came from Man of the Match Milsom who had Olejnik dashing across goal to see the ball go inches wide. Joe Skarz was the next Miller to see a shot go past the post while both Nardiello and Revell went for a Pringle cross and seemed to get in each others way. Scott Shearer did well to block a shot from Taylor before being on hand to stop an Assombalonga shot finding the back of the net. With five minutes of added time at the end of the ninety it was all the Millers and Tom Eaves, on for Skarz, headed a good ball down to Bradley who looked certain to score but blazed over into the Millers fans.
Coming out of the New York Stadium this evening everyone was looking at each other shaking heads wondering how we'd not won that. I don't think Scott Shearer had more than two shots to save all game. We battered the Posh and I think even their fans will think that tonight.
