Rotherham United go into the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on the back of a three-nil win over York City this evening at Bootham Crescent.
After a less than enthralling seventeen minutes the Millers opened the scoring after defender Joe Skarz fed a ball in which hit City's Chris Smith who diverted the ball past his own 'keeper. Even after the goal the game didn't really pick up with York's first chance of the game coming just after the half-hour mark when a Luke O'Neill cross found the head of Elliot Whitehouse but he put the ball wide. Eight minutes later the hosts had a good chance to equalise when a good header from Ryan Jarvis was hacked off the goal line by Millers defender Pablo Mills. In the final minutes of the half Millers 'keeper Adam Collin could only parry an Ashley Chambers shot and when the ball fell to Wes Fletcher striker put the ball into the back of the net but, unfortunately for him and the York fans, the goal was disallowed for off-side.
York came out the better side in the second half and in the opening minutes a header from Daniel Parslow went narrowly wide while Mills and Alex Revell both got back to clear balls away from danger. Ten minutes in a good cross from Fletcher found Whitehouse whose left footed shot went just wide and at the other end Chris Smith managed to clear a Joe Skarz shot. The game was becoming a bit livelier and after the Millers had a shout for a penalty turned down when Parslow appeared to handle in the area, minutes later Collin did well to save a header from Chambers with the Millers' Danny Hylton putting the ball just past the post at the other end while Alex Revell tried to chip the 'keeper but also managed to chip the crossbar. On sixty-two minutes the game was up for the Minstermen when Lewis Montrose brought Kieran Agard down in the penalty area and the Millers forward picked himself up and sent the home 'keeper, Michael Ingham, the wrong way from the resulting spot kick. Six minutes the Millers made it three when a good ball in from Richard Brindley found the head of Alex Revell who gave Ingham no chance as he headed the ball into the top of the net. Ben Pringle could have made it four but saw a shot go just wide and in time added on Ingham did well to get down to smother a Revell shot.
Good result for the Millers tonight.
