Young Millers Lose In Scotland
19 July 2014
A Rotherham United team made up of the development squad were well and truly beaten this afternoon at Palmerston Park where they took on Queen of the South despite taking an early lead.
The youthful Millers started really well and in the opening minute Mitch Rose was denied by the home defence and a minute later Alex Wiles brought off a good save from Zander Clarke in the Queens' goal. And it was from the resulting corner that the Millers took the lead when the ball fell to Danny Rowe who had the simplest of jobs to toe poke the ball over the line for the opening goal. The young Millers were doing well and reduced the hosts to long range shots one of which was from Kevin Dzierzawski which ended in the back of the net but an offside flag saw it still one-nil to the visitors. With the rain pouring down in the last few minutes of the half Queens got themselves level with their first shot on target when summer signing from Raith John Baird heads the ball into the net.
The Millers youngsters never really got going in the second half and Baird thought he'd got his second but Thompson made a great save although once again, the offside flag was being waved and minutes later only a great goal-line clearance from Danny Rowe, with Millers' 'keeper Tony Thompson in no-mans land, saved a shot from Baird. However just after the hour mark the Millers' luck ran out when defender Kevin Holt cuts the ball back for Baird who got his second of the day. Five minutes later it was three-one when Derek Lyle taps the ball in from a couple of yards out and on seventy-seven minutes the Millers conceded a corner and a great header from Lyle ended in the net. Lyle turned provider three minutes later when he got in a cross to defender Lewis Kidd who made it five-one.
Bit of a shame for the lads today but it would have been a good indication of what life as a professional will be.
