Referee:

Rotherham United got just their second point on the road yesterday afternoon at Deepdale with the score ending one-all.

Not having won an away game since 9th April last year (at MK Dons) it was a bit of a surprise when a corner eventually fell to Richie Smallwood on the edge of the area who controlled well and then saw his looping strike go through a rack of bodies to beat Preston 'keeper Chris Maxwell to give the Millers a ninth minute lead. And just four minutes later it should have been two when a ball in hit Alex Baptiste and went to Tom Adeyemi who let fly from fifteen yards out to see his shot go inches wide. At the other end Joe Mattock did well to head away a cross from Daniel Johnson while Semi Ajayi was well placed to block a shot from the same player. Jonson Clarke-Harris, starting his first game of the season, had a try from thirty-five yards out which caught Maxwell on the hop but he managed to parry away before some good work between Will Vaulks and Richard Wood saw the latter get the ball over a defender but not past Maxwell. Aiden McGeady did well to get past Darnell Fisher but Jordan Hugill couldn't get on the end of the cross. After a slip by Mattock Richard O'Donnell, who hadn't had a lot to do, saved comfortably from a McGeady shot before Hugill had a chance but he put his shot wide. Four minutes before the break saw the hosts draw level when Stevie May, also starting his first game of the season, was fed a ball by McGeady and his fierce shot from just outside the box flew into the top corner of the net. In time added on the visitors should have been back in the lead when Clarke-Harris headed the ball down for Adeyemi but he blazed the ball way over the crossbar when it looked easier to score.

The Millers began the second half well and Tom Adeyemi brought a lovely save from Chris Maxwell in the opening minute of the half. Lee Frecklington won a corner for the visitors which Jon Taylor took and found Frecklington's head but Maxwell was there to save before a cross minutes later from Taylor caused all sorts of problems in the Preston defence before Maxwell managed to punch behind. After some good work from Will Vaulks he sent Taylor on his way down the wing again but his cross was a little short for Frecklington to get. Just before the hour mark Preston nearly went ahead when an Aiden McGeady shot was tipped over by a back-peddling O'Donnell. Both Taylor and Clarke-Harris saw shots saved before Richard Wood was in the right place at the right time to block a shot from Jordan Hugill. Preston replaced Stevie May with Callum Robinson and Tom Barkhuizen with Daryl Hogan. Another cross in from Taylor found the head of Wood but his header was too high. The only booking of the game came on seventy minutes for Richie Smallwood after a poor challenge on McGeady. The Millers first substitution saw Carlton Morris on for Jonson Clarke-Harris. The Millers had another chance to re-take the lead a superb cross in from Vaulks found Taylor but he put the ball wide before Jamie Yates replaced Lee Frecklington while Simon Makienok came on for Preston with Hugill going off. Tyias Browning was guilty of a miss for the hosts when his header from a cross by McGeady went wide before McGeady himself also put a shot over the crossbar. Richard Wood was replaced by Aimen Belaid for the Millers. As the game was going into the last minute Makienok got the better of O'Donnell only to see his header hit the crossbar and rebound into the arms of the Millers' 'keeper.

A good point for the Millers which ended a run of fourteen successive losses on the road.
