Millers Win In Another Five Star Performance

Rotherham United
5 - 1
Oldham Athletic

New York Stadium

23 September 2017 3.00pm

Attendance: 8,250 (825 from Oldham)

Referee:

Rotherham United scored another five goals this afternoon at the New York Stadium to give them a five-one win over Oldham Athletic, but, at half-time it really could have been anyone's game.

It was a slow start from both sides with the visitors having the first chance on five minutes when Craig Davies did well to control a cross from Jack Byrne but the forwards shot went well wide of the post. Jon Taylor put a couple of crosses in for the hosts but were just a bit heavy before Ben Purrington, in for the suspended Joe Mattock, let fly from the edge of the box bringing a superb save from Latics' 'keeper Jack Ruddy. From the resulting Ryan Williams corner top scorer Kieffer Moore saw his header hit the crossbar but up jumped Michael Ihiekwe to steer the ball over the line giving the hosts the lead. Referee Mr Brooks gave a few iffy decisions, a couple against Taylor who seemed to be having his shirt pulled regularly. Some nice work from Richie Towell saw the ball eventually find Lee Frecklington but the shot from the skipper was always rising before Ryan McLaughlin found himself in space but the ball went harmlessly wide. Moore looked like he'd got into a good position in the box but was penalised for a handball which only Mr Brooks saw. At the other end Will Vaulks was forced to head out for a corner with McLaughlin breathing down his neck which Bryne took and with the Millers defence standing still the ball fell to Davies who made it one-one from six yards out. From the re-start Taylor did well to race down the wing, his cross into the box just missing Williams before Williams dummied his marker and put the ball in for Towell who was challenged just before it reached him. On twenty-five minutes the visitors should have been in front when Byrne got the ball to Tope Obadeyi who only had to shoot but he dragged the shot and sent the ball wide. A mistake from Richard Wood minutes later saw him lose the ball to Davies and then appeared to tug the shirt of the Oldham player but the referee waved play on. Taylor and Dan Gardner had a spat which saw the Oldham player put his head in the wingers face ending when both saw yellow cards and McLaughlin was helped from the field to be replaced by Cameron Dummigan. Darren Potter got himself forward only to see his shot blocked before some nice work between Taylor and Ihiekwe ended with Wood blasting the ball into the stands. Just before half-time George Edmundson was booked for taking out Williams who had got himself in a good position with Taylor's free-kick going behind for a corner which came to nothing.

The Millers had the first sight of goal in the second half but Jon Taylor didn't make the best of it and saw his shot go over before a scramble in the box saw the ball go out with the referee awarding a corner which went into a ruck of bodies before Taylor slammed the ball into the net only to see a linesman's flag up for offside. Ryan Williams saw a shot cleared before Taylor crossed into the box but Kieffer Moore couldn't quite get there. Moore and Williams combined well but the ball went across goal before Lee Frecklington sent a shot just wide. Jon Taylor got a standing ovation when he was replaced by Joe Newell on the hour mark with Oldham bringing on Queensy Menig and Abdelhakim Omrani for Tope Obadeyi and Dan Gardner. Newell was soon in the action putting a shot wide before he took a free-kick after Williams was hauled to the floor by Gevaro Nepomucen, who was booked, which went wide. A Byrne corner at the other end had to be well cleared by the Millers defence before Craig Davies tried his luck from twenty yards out which came to nothing. But then the goals starting raining in. After some lovely work by Richie Towell saw Jack Ruddy do well to push a Williams shot away the ball fell to Moore who made it two-one on seventy-three minutes. After Newell won and took a corner for the hosts Moore rose highest and made it three-one. Richie Towell was replaced by Anthony Forde while Jerry Yates came on for Kieffer Moore. A spectator for most of the second half Marek Rodak had to get down to turn a shot from Jack Byrne with the resulting corner ending up in the side netting. With two minutes to go Newell danced down the wing and sent the ball into the path of the onrushing Forde who slotted the ball into the net to make it four-one and a minute later it was five when the ball was headed down by Towell to Yates who said 'thank you very much' and scored his first goal of the season.

I think it's been proved that the Millers can score goals, this being the third time this season we have scored five goals at home. Does the defence need work? Yes, I think it does. When Oldham scored did the heads go down? No they didn't. Would they have gone down last season? Oh yes. Were we four goals better than Oldham? Probably not. Do we care? Not in the least!

Star Player

Have to give Jon Taylor a mention as he was up against two players and the officials all the time he was on. After Warney saying how good Potter is I kept an eye on him today and thought he did OK. The subs came on and did their jobs, two of them scoring and I thought Ryan Williams did well today too. And not a hundred per cent fit Kieffer Moore had another good game. So, I'm still undecided about who my Man of the Match is!
