Millers Net Three Points

Three second half home goals saw the Millers come from one down to take all three points today in the first League game between Rotherham and Morecambe at Millmoor.

The visitors opened the scoring in the first minutes of the second half with a Jim Bentley header but the Millers came back with a penalty from Stephen Brogan and two goals from Jamie Yates who came on as substitute for Chris O`Grady in the first half.

The Millers had the first chance on ten minutes when a Stephen Brogan corner found Ian Sharps head who saw Joe Lewis in Morecambe`s goal tip it over and from the resulting Danny Harrison corner Jim Bentley cleared up field. Dale Tongue saw Lewis save from his feeble shot while Marc Newsham saw two shots go just past the post. On the thirty-sixth minute David Artell`s poor back pass put Lewis under pressure and both the goalkeeper and Rotherham`s Chris O`Grady went up for the ball which ended in a clash of heads. Both players were on the ground for several minutes and Lewis was eventually stretchered off with, what it thought to be, a fractured collar bone. Both players have severe gashes to their heads. Jamie Yates came on for O`Grady and Steven Dench for Lewis. After this the game seem to peter out a little and it was nil-nil at half time.

The visitors opened the scoring when a Michael Twiss corner found Jim Bentley at the far post and he headed it into an empty net in the first minute of the second half. Bentley had the ball in the net again fifteen minutes later but it was disallowed as referee, Mr Deadman, said he was climbing. The Millers got straight into Morecambe`s penalty area and ex Miller, Artell, pulled Marcus Bean back and the home team were awarded a penalty which Stephen Brogan calmly slotted past Dench for the equaliser. A few minutes later a mass brawl broke out which resulted in three bookings, Mark Hudson for the home side and Jim Bentley and Craig Stanley for the visitors. Ten minutes later, Marc Newsham crossed the ball into the area and Bentley intercepted it only for it to fall for Yates to score his first and the Millers second and he was there again three minutes from time when a looping shot by Ryan Cresswell was deflected back to Yates who got his second for the club and the Millers third of the game.

At the end of the game Morecambe manager, Sammy McIlroy ran onto the pitch to confront the officials and was seen to be jabbing his finger at referee Deadman, and I don`t think we will have heard the end of this incident.

But Mark Robins must be pleased with the three points tonight and with the team as a whole.

Star Player

After much deliberation, and not only for his two goals today but for his all round enthusiasm after coming on as sub, I am giving it to JAMIE YATES
