Midfielder Matt came through the Youth System at Hillsborough and went on to make over seventy-five appearances for the Owls before being released in May 2005. He then went on to play for Stockport before playing over ninety games for Mansfield. 2008 saw him join Notts County and two years later Macclesfield Town. September 2012 saw him join Matlock Town (and score on his debut)before moving to Stocksbridge a few weeks later.

While with Macclesfield he also joined Rotherham as part-time coach with the various Youth teams and although playing for Stocksbridge in the summer of 2012 he took up full-time coaching with the Millers, eventually taking over the role of Development Phase Lead Coach.

Taking up First Team duties under Kenny Jackett when Paul Warne took over as 'interim' Manager Matty became his 'right-hand man'
