RUFC - Head-to-Head v Morecambe

Vital Stats Man, Zipadeedoodah has been finding out about our games with Morecambe

The Millers last visit to Morecambe on March 29th 2008 is definately one to forget.
Rotherham had won the home game v Football League newcomers Morecambe 3-1 at Millmoor the previous October.
Despite being 1-0 down just after half time to a Jim Bentley goal, the Millers hit back in the last 20 through Stephen Brogan (71 mins) and a double strike from Jamie Yates, his first ever first team goals, on 81 and 87 minutes.
However things turned out much different at Christie Park.
5 days earlier on Easter Monday Rotherham had suffered a 4-1 reversal at Rochdale and were looking to avenge this result at Morecambe.
Morecambe again took the lead, this time through Matty Blinkhorn after 8 minutes, but just 60 seconds later the deficit was doubled by Jon Newby, who then went on to hit his second and Morecambe's third on 18 minutes.
Mark Hudson gave Rotherham a glimmer of hope 10 minutes before the break when he made it 3-1, but 3 minutes from the interval Newby netted his hat-trick goal to make it 4-1 and more or less kill the game for the Millers.
Brave goalkeeping by Millers star man Andy Warrington kept the scoreline down to a minimum and Morecambe just added one more after the break through Craig Stanley on 73 minutes to finish the game at 5-1.

The previous encounter at Christie Park came over 28 years earlier when the 2 clubs were drawn together in the FA Cup 1st round on 24th November 1979.
Morecambe were playing 3 divisions lower down than Rotherham at that time in the old Northern Premier League, and
4,100 turned up at Christie Park looking for an upset.
The favourites took a first half lead through Richard Finney, but a second half penalty scored by left winger McLachlan earned the non-leaguers a replay.
Rotherham made no mistake in the replay and won 2-0 through goals either side of the interval from centre backs, John Green and Paul Stancliffe in front of 5,671 at Millmoor 3 days later.
N.B Rotherham lost 2-0 to Alliance Premier League side Altrincham at Millmoor in the second round.
