RUFC - Head-to-Head v Chesterfield

Our stats man, Zipadeedoodah has been finding out about the Millers v Chesterfield

Millers fans are well aware of the abysmal record against close rivals Chesterfield, but the sickening chants of 'You'll never beat the Spireites' are becoming rarer than Rotherham losing on penalties, following 4 wins from our last 7 meetings dating back to 2004.

Last time at Saltergate was on 5th December 2007, with Rotherham looking for a 7th straight League victory.
A very strong wind that Wednesday night didn't deter 1,500 Millers fans making the short trip to swell the gate to 5,417, and we were rewarded with the first goal after just 8 minutes.
A 20 yard strike from Chris O'Grady was only parried by Spires keeper Barry Roche, and Derek Holmes was on hand to knock the loose ball over the line.
10 minutes after the interval and the Millers doubled the lead.
Peter Holmes knocked the ball in from the left, O'Grady was supplier again, as he headed the cross down for Chesterfield old boy Mark Hudson to control on his chest and volley home for 2-0.
This victory left Rotherham in 3rd place in League 2, level with Darlington, albeit a far inferior goal difference, and just 2 points away from leaders MK Dons.
The League double over Chesterfield, the first in 80 years was achieved when we beat the Spireites 2-1 in March 2008.
Peter Holmes and Marc Joseph netting late first half goals for the Millers and Jamie Ward getting a 75th minute consolation for the visitors.

The blast from the past comes from 12th April 1972, this was the last Millers win at Saltergate prior to the 'Victory in the rain' in August 2005.
Rotherham had lost 4 days previous to Chesterfield at Millmoor courtesy of a 2nd half goal from young Scottish striker Samuel Ferris and went to the home of the Spireites looking to exact revenge.
The Millers achieved this in front of 7,140 at Saltergate with a first half goal from Bradford born, 5 foot 5 inch striker, Bobby Ham.
This win moved Rotherham into 6th place in Division 3, but still 10 points adrift of 2nd placed Brighton.
Aston Villa were sat proud at the top of Division 3 that day while Chesterfield lie in 11th position.
