RUFC - Head-to-Head v Bournemouth

As Rotherham United head south for the long trip to Bournemouth this Saturday, here's a look at this fixture over the years.....

It's almost 40 years since the two sides met for the first time, when a 1-1 draw at Millmoor saw the points shared in the Division 3 game on 26th October 1968, with Jim Storrie netting for Rotherham.

In the first 9 meetings at Bournemouth's Dean Court ground between 1968 and 1990, the home side were in no mood for sharing, and won no less than 8 of those games, with the solitary Millers victory coming in December 1985, as first half goals from Mike Trusson and Tommy Tynan gave Rotherham a 2-1 victory...Roger Brown scoring a second half consolation for the Cherries.

Since 1990 though, the Bournemouth tide has turned and the 8 meetings to date have brought just 2 home wins, with Rotherham winning twice and 4 games been drawn.

Last time out was on 21st October 2006, as the Millers won their 3rd League game of the 4 that month which resulted in Manager Phil Henson receiving the Manager of the Month award.
The Millers were still down in 23rd position in League One, despite already winning 6 League games, but the 10 point deduction from the seasons start meant they were still only standing on plus 10 for the season.
Bournemouth were struggling in 18th position.
Eugen Bopp opened the scoring on 18 minutes, with a 25 yard shot following a surging run through the centre of the park.
The Cherries equalised after 31 minutes as a free-kick from former England player, Darren Anderton, found the head of Josh Gowling to level the game.
Rotherham had to wait just 2 minutes to regain the lead when a pass from Michael Keane found Will Hoskins who headed into the bottom corner of the net.
The scoring was completed as early as the 36th minute when Lee Williamson scored arguably the goal of the game.
He picked the ball up on the halfway line following a flick on from Hoskins and ran at the retreating Bournemouth defence before curling the ball past Cherries keeper Gareth Stewart from the edge of the area.
Will Hoskins came close to stretching the lead for Rotherham towards the end of the second half, but the job was already done and the Millers fans in the 5,544 crowd went home the happiest.

The other Rotherham win at Dean court, came in the 2000-2001 promotion season, when the 2 teams met on October 14th.
Rotherham were sitting just outside the Division 2 play-off position in 8th, while Bournemouth had won just one League game all season and were in 21st.
The League placings were justified as the Millers restricted the Cherries to just 1 shot on goal, a 18 yarder from Gareth O'Connor which Millers keeper Ian Gray held comfortably.
Rotherham took a grip from the start although they had some fortune with the only goal of the game.
On 11 minutes, as Kevin Watson quickly struck his free kick from the left hand corner of the area, the linesman's flag shot up, against Paul Warne who had made an early run and who just failed to get a touch as the ball carried on beyond the keeper's left hand corner.
The Polish linesman kept his flag up, but after being consulted by Ref Phil Joslin, the goal was allowed.
Rotherham were very much in charge, but couldn't back up the pressure with more goals, despite Stewart Talbot and Alan Lee both going close after the break.
French trialist Cedric Bolima got his 5 minutes of fame at the end of the game as the Millers maintained the general hold of the game they had held all afternoon.
