RUFC - Head-to-Head v Shrewsbury Town

RUFC - Head-to-Head v Shrewsbury Town
This Saturday, Rotherham United make the trip to Shrewsbury Town for a League Two game.

Here's a look at the history of this fixture.

The Millers make their 2nd visit to The Shrews, New Meadow ground this Saturday looking to get back to winning ways.
The name Shrewsbury Town will always be linked to Rpotherham United's history following our win over the Shropshire club in the 1996 Auto Windscreens Final at Wembley.
Both sets of fans need no reminding that we were victorious to the tune of 2-1 that afternoon, but what some fans may not be aware of is that the first ever cup meeting between the 2 sides took place in the 1960-61 League Cup semi-finals.
The Millers were winners again as a 4-3 aggregate scoreline took Rotherham to the first ever League Cup Final, only to lose to Aston Villa 3-2 over the 2 legged match.

The last meeting of the 2 sides came on 3rd March 2008 at Shrewsbury's New Meadow ground, and while it was Rotherham's first ever game at the new Stadium, it was also the 50th meeting of the 2 clubs in all competitions.
The game ended 1-1 in front of 5,265 fans and both goals were scored just before half-time, and both following free-kicks.
A Mark Hudson free-kick on 37 minutes found the head of Pablo Mills to put 5th placed Rotherham into a 1-0 lead, but the home side equalised 5 minutes later when a Ben Herd free-kick went to Ben Davies who hit a low angled shot past Andy Warrington in the Millers goal.
The Millers team included on-loan defender Joe Widdowson from Wes Ham United, whilst the Shrews team featured former Millers, Colin Murdock and Dave Hibbert.
Rotherham dropped to 7th place in League 2 following this result, while Shrewsbury were in 15th.

The Millers last victory at Shrewsbury came on April 20th 1999.
This victory came on the back of a 3-1 home win over Carlisle 3 days earlier, a game in which Leo Fortune-West netted an hat-trick.
The big in-form striker opened the scoring at Shrewsbury after just 8 minutes for his 6th goal in 6 games.
However, 5th placed Rotherham were knocked back on level terms when Lee Steele scored for 20th placed Shrews just 5 minutes later.
The teams went in level at half time and the Millers again took the lead on 67 minutes through Fortune-West's strike partner Paul Warne.
Yet again though the home side struck back, this time through substitute Steve Jagielka 11 minutes from time.
The game was ending for a draw when, just 4 minutes from the final whistle, Rotherham's centre half Phil Whelan, on loan from Oxford, hit the wnner with his 3rd Millers goal of his loan period.
The crowd was a paltry 1,620, but it was the Rotherham fans who went home the happiest.
The Shrewsbury team included former Miller Brian Gayle.
