RUFC - Head-to-Head v Posh

Rotherham United travel to Peterborough on Tuesday night for the first round of the Carling Cup, which is actually the first time these two teams have met in this competition.

The results between the two sides over the years has been pretty even with the Millers having one more victory over all.

The last time they met in the league both games were three-one victories to the home side. In August 2007, at Millmoor, the Millers were three up in thirty-five minutes. Derek Holmes opened the scoring on eight minutes, Chris O`Grady doubled the score on thirty-three minutes and two minutes later Holmes scored for the second time. Aaron McLean got a consolation for the post two minutes from time.

At London Road Charlie Lee put the home side in the lead on twenty-two minutes with Aaron McLean scoring the second ten minutes from time. On ninety minutes Ryan Taylor gave the Millers a glimmer of hope but six minutes into four added on by referee Mike Russell, Craig Mackail-Smith got the third for Posh to give them all three points.

Two matches that stick out in my mind were trouncings, one for each side and both at London Road. The Millers travelled to Peterborough at the end of November 1996 and Paul Blades put them one up in the opening ten minutes only for Martin Carruthers to equalise ten minutes later. Bradley Sandeman put the visitors ahead on the half hour mark only for Peterborough to get a penalty on the stroke of half-time and Scott Houghton put the spot kick away. From the re-start the Millers gave the ball away and Roger Willis put the ball past Steve Farrelly for the home side to go in at half-time three-two up. Willis was on hand to score another three minutes into the second half and on the hour mark and own goal from Mark Monington gave the home side five and nine minutes later Carruthers got his second of the game for the result to be six-two. Just after the goal, to make the Millers` misery complete, Ian Breckin got his marching orders and went for an early bath.

The most memorable game though, for Millers fans, between the sides, has to be Boxing Day 1999. Ronnie Moore had asked if the game could be postponed as half his squad was down with flu but the answer was a firm 'no` and not one Millers fan was expecting to see much of a game from the Millers so it was a bit of a surprise when Danny Hudson put them in front on two minutes. Paul Warne then added two more, one of thirty-four minutes and another four minutes into the second half and Steve Thompson and Leo Fortune-West walked past the Posh defenders to score and make the game a great five-nil victory for the visitors in front of nearly eleven thousand fans.
