A BATES from Staffordshire

Tony qualified as a referee in 1983 becoming a National List Assistant Referee ten year later. In 1996 he became a FIFA assistant referee and was also appointed to Euro 1996 and, in the same year, joined the National List of Referees which makes him one of the longest serving. Tony was Assistant Referee in the 1995 Charity Shield FA Cup Final of 1996.

The last time Tony was in charge of a Millers game was February this year. Dagenham and Redbridge were the visitors to Don Valley and Adam Le Fondre scored two goals to give Rotherham all three points. The first was on eleven minutes and then he scored from the spot on thirty-five minutes. Nick Fenton, Mark Arber and Paul Benson were booked that day in front of 2,604 spectators.

This season, Tony has been in charge of twelve games, dishing out thirty-two yellows and three red cards.
