RUFC - Head-to-Head v Grimsby Town

Rotherham United begin their pre-season games with a short trip to Blundell Park to take on Grimsby Town.

The Millers and Mariners have met fifty-five times in the past, in league and cup, with the Millers coming out on top with twenty-eight wins to the Mariners sixteen.

The first time the sides met at Blundell Park was in November 1919, in the Old English Division Two, with the Millers winning 1-0. Coming right up to the present, the last time the sides met at Grimsby was in August 2009 when an Adam Le Fondre penalty put the Millers ahead on fifty-three minutes. Peter Sweeney equalised for the home side eleven minutes later but it was a short lived lead as, three minutes later, Micky Cummins got the Millers winner.

The biggest defeat the Millers had at Blundell Park was in the 1984/5 League Cup - when Grimsby, after drawing 0-0 at Millmoor, won 6-1. Birch scored the Millers only goal.

In the 1988/9 season the sides met five times. Twice in Division Four, with the Millers winning at Blundell Park (4-0 - Bobby Williamson (2), Pat Heard and Andy Williams) and at Millmoor (1-0 - Nigel Johnson) and twice in the League Cup with the Millers winning both games 1-0. This was the season that the sides met for the only time in the FA Cup with the Mariners winning 3-2 at home.
