'If It's Football, It's Vital'

RUFC - Ref Watch v Wimbledon

David Phillips from West Sussex

David started refereeing in 1981, progressing through the the West Sussex League, Sussex County League and Southern League. In 2003 he got a double promotion onto the Panel League as Referee and Football League as Assistant Referee and five years later was promoted to the National List of Referees.

The last game that David was in charge of involving the Millers was last season at Don Valley against Shrewsbury. The Shrews went in at half-time two-up with goals from Jim Collins and a forty-third minute penalty from Nicky Wroe after Luke Ashworth allegedly fouled him in the area. Collins got a second three minutes into the second half after a disastrous clearance from Andy Warrington hit Jason Taylor and fell to Collins who steered it into an empty net. Adam Le Fondre got a consolation goal for the Millers twenty minutes from the end of the game.

David was also in the middle for the game at Adams Park in January last year when a goal from Gareth Ainsworth was enough to give the home side all three points. David had a busy day booking Dave Winfield and Kevin Betsy of Wycombe and Jason Taylor and Mark Randall from the Millers and on the ninetieth minute, Jason Taylor received a straight red for violent conduct.

In the 2008/9 season, David was in the middle for two Millers games - the first against Dagenham and Redbridge where Paul Benson put the home side one up on fifty minutes and Mark Burchill got an equaliser six minutes from time. In April the Millers went to Aldershot, where a Reuben Reid goal on eleven minutes was enough to give Rotherham all three points. There was five bookings that day - Newman, Charles and Straker from the Shots and Ian Sharps and Drewe Broughton for the Millers.

This season David has been in charge of twenty-nine games showing eighty-nine yellow cards and eight red cards.
