RUFC - Head-to-Head v The Stags

RUFC - Head-to-Head v The Stags
Rotherham United travel to Field Mill for a pre-season friendly with Mansfield Town and it's quite a different situation since the last time the two met.

In April 2008 the Millers went to Field Mill under a cloud, in administration, looking for new owners and the day before the game Chief Operating Officer told local radio that the game against Mansfield could be the last for the Millers. The players met with the PFA and had agreed to take another pay-cut - the first one had been a fifty per cent cut in March and this was another ten per cent cut. Millers` fans took to their heels and walked from Millmoor to Field Mill to raise cash for the club, raising around 15,000.

The game ended one-nil to the Millers with a cracking goal from Jamie Yates on seventy-one minutes when he shot from some forty-yards out and probably was as surprised as everyone else to see the ball whistle over Stags 'keeper Jason White and thump into the back of the net. For added effect it could also be said that this was the goal that sent Mansfield tumbling out of league football and into the conference which they did after losing two-nil the following Saturday to Dagenham and Redbridge.

The Millers actually beat the Stags three times in their last season in the League, firstly at Field Mill in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy when a goal from Ian Sharps four minutes into the second half was enough to see them through to the next round. At Millmoor in October Marcus Bean, Marc Newsham and Stephen Brogan gave the Millers a deserved three-nil lead but a goal from Michael Boulding on seventy-six minutes for the Stags followed by another seven minutes later from Nathan Arnold made it a nail-biting finale for Rotherham fans.
