RUFC - Head-to-Head v The Minstermen

Rotherham United start the Johnstone's Paint campaign this season at their new home when they welcome fellow League Two side, York City, to the New York Stadium.

The Millers and Minstermen have met a few times over the years in Cup games, the last one being the FA Cup in November 2010. The game at Don Valley ended nil-nil and the trip to Bootham Crescent ended in a three-nil defeat for the visitors. The game started badly for the Millers when Ryan Cresswell pulled up with a back injury in the warm-up and from there it got worse. Chris Smith opened the scoring for the home side on sixty-six minutes and three minutes later Luke Ashworth gave a penalty away after tumbling with James Fyfield and Michael Rankine scored from the spot. Ten minutes from time Rankine was on target again to make it a good win for City who went onto play Darlington in the next round.

The last time the Minstermen were on Rotherham soil was at Millmoor in August 2003 in the Carling Cup. Chris Swailes put the Millers ahead in the opening minutes of the game only for David Merris to equalise on thirty-three minutes. But a Chris Sedgwick goal two minutes before half-time was enough to put the Millers through to the next round and meet Colchester before, eventually, being put out of the competition by Arsenal at Highbury on penalties.

This is the fourth time that The Millers and Minstermen have met in this competition the last time being a four-one win for the Millers in the 1995/6 season at Millmoor.
