RUFC - Head-to-Head v Port Vale

RUFC - Head-to-Head v Port Vale
Rotherham United haven't had a 'home' Boxing Day fixture since 2008 which, coincidentally was against this years opponents, Port Vale.

The game that day was settled by a goal from substitute Drew Broughton on sixty-seven minutes. The game began badly for the Millers when, on twenty-four minutes, Marc Joseph's attempted back-pass to 'keeper David Stockdale was short and when Vale's Kyle Perry nipped in to claim the ball Joseph pulled him back and referee Boyeson had no choice but to produce a red card.

The last time the Millers beat Vale at 'home' was on New Years Day at Don Valley. Nicky Law opened the scoring on ten minutes with Ryan Taylor doubling it eight minutes later. Just after the half-hour mark Vale 'keeper Stewart Tomlinson hacked down Marcus Marshall just outside the area and referee Graham Salisbury sent him for an early bath. Will Atkinson made it three-nil to the Millers a minute into the second half with another goal from Taylor and one from Mark Bradley giving the Millers a five-nil victory and sent them second in the table.

The last time the two met on Rotherham soil was in March 2007 when Akpo Sodje scored a first half hat-trick plus another from George Pilkington to send the visitors in four-nil up at half-time. Delroy Facey pulled one back for the Millers on sixty-seven minutes but a fourth from Sodje eleven minutes later gave the Valiants a five-one victory.

The last time the Millers beat Vale in the League at Millmoor was in January 2001. Mark Robins put the Millers one-up on twenty-four minutes but Micky Cummins (then at Vale Park) equalised just after the hour mark. Alan Lee put the home side back in front but five minutes later Steve Brooker equalised for a second time. In the final minute of the game Paul Warne gave the Millers all three points.

Earlier this season at Vale Park the Valiants were emphatic victors. Former Miller Tom Pope scored four in the game with Louis Dodds and Ashley Vincent also scoring. Michael O'Connor and a penalty from Daniel Nardiello made the score six-two.
