Paul was promoted to the select group of assistant referees in 2008 and in the same year was appointed as an assistant referee for a Football League Play Off Semi-Final and a UEFA Cup tie and this is his sixth season as a Football League Referee.

The last time Paul was in the middle for a Milers game was in August 2012 which was the first League game at the New York Stadium when Burton Albion were the visitors. After Zander Diamond fouled Daniel Nardiello in the box Nards picked himself up and took the resulting spot kick to open the scoring. Six minutes later Kayode Odejayi made it two-nil. Burton had to play the last thirty minutes with ten men after two silly challenges by Lee Bell saw him get two yellow cards. With fifteen minutes to go a deflected looping ball from Ben Pringle made it three-nil and saw the Millers win their first ever competitive game at their new home.

The season previous to that Paul was in charge of two games involving the Millers - firstly away at Crewe where goals from Adam Le Fondre and Ben Pringle gave the Millers a two-one win and secondly our away game at Port Vale in October where two Marc Richards goals gave the hosts all three points.

The first time we met Paul was in September 2009 at Whaddon Road where the game against Cheltenham ended in a draw after Adam Le Fondre had opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time Julian Alsop equalised with five minutes to go for the home side.

A few weeks later he was in charge of our FA Cup game against Luton at Don Valley. Luton went in front from a Tom Craddock penalty with Adam Le Fondre equalising on forty-five minutes. Stephen Brogan put the Millers in front just after the hour mark but a goal ten minutes later from Mark Nwokeji gave the Hatters a draw and a replay.

Paul was also in charge of our game in August 2010 which saw Adam Le Fondre score four goals. Cheltenham Town were the visitors at Don Valley and it was through a Jeff Goulding strike we saw them take an early lead. Alfie equalised only for Wes Thomas to put Town back in front followed by a Sean Jeffers goal to make it three-one. Danny Harrison pulled one back for the Milers five minutes before half-time and Alfie equalised just after the break. Two minutes later Alfie got his hat-trick followed by a Ryan Cresswell goal on fifty-five minutes and Alfie`s fourth came ten minutes later. As the clock was ticking down Keith Lowe scored for the visitors but the Millers won the game six-four.

In the three games Paul has been in charge of this season he has shown eleven yellow cards and two red cards - one of those being to former Millers loanee Luke Rooney, now with Luton Town.
